About the event

Juneteenth (short for “June Nineteenth”) marks the day when federal troops arrived in Galveston, Texas in 1865 to take control of the state and ensure that all enslaved people be freed. The troops’ arrival came a full two and a half years after the signing of the Emancipation Proclamation. Juneteenth honors the end to slavery in the United States.

This 4.5k walk/run is both an opportunity for the community to gather and, celebrate. But it also represents the time and distance it took for the news of freedom to travel to the last enslaved people.

The $20 registration for this event covers an E3 Juneteenth T-Shirt and proceeds to go to support the continued anti-racism advocacy of Northern Michigan E3.

The roughly 4.5-kilometer route will both start and end at Right Brain Brewery and take around an hour and fifteen minutes at a walking pace.

Signage will be present as a guide and to show when to turn around to double back to Right Brain. The halfway point is the field below Inverness Retirement Home.
